Matt Tomkins was born June 19, 1994, in Edmonton, Alberta. He is a goaltender in the NHL.

Tomkins played junior hockey in the Alberta Junior Hockey League for two seasons, from 2011 to 2013. He was selected in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks. After junior, Tomkins chose to go to university, attending Ohio State University for four years. After finishing university in 2017, Tomkins signed an entry-level contract with Chicago and was assigned to their minor league affiliates. Tomkins played in the Chicago system until 2021.

Tomkins then played two seasons abroad, playing in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) with Frölunda HC and Färjestad BK before returning to North America following the 2022–23 season. On May 10, 2023, Tomkins was signed as a free agent on a two-year, two-way contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Tomkins made his NHL debut with the Lightning on October 15, 2023 in a 5-2 loss to the Ottawa Senators in Ottawa.
