John Carlson was born January 10, 1990, in Natick, Massachusetts. He is a defenseman in the NHL.

Carlson was drafted by the Capitals in the first round, 27th overall, in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. On June 24, 2018, having just won the Stanley Cup with Washington, Carlson signed an eight-year, $64 million contract extension with the Capitals.
