Mike McGlinchey was born on January 12th, 1994 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is an offensive tackle in the National Football League.
McGlinchey was so big for his age that as a child, his parents would make sure to bring his birth certificate to his basketball games. Later, at age eight, he was hoping to make his debut in youth football, but decided against it after the league’s directors told his family that they would have placed him on a team with eighth and ninth graders due to his size. Embracing such a large frame as a child, McGlinchey constantly threw his weight around with his large family, which featured 22 cousins and 5 siblings. Even at his grandmother’s wake, McGlinchey and his extended family engaged in a pickup football game while still dressed in their suits. Mike say that's the way she would have wanted it.
McGlinchey attended William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Along with football, he also played basketball in high school. He began his high school career as a tight end before transitioning to offensive line. He was named a team captain as a senior in 2012. McGlinchey was first-team offensive lineman on the 2012 Pennsylvania Sports Writers AAAA All-State football team, and first-team offensive lineman on Philadelphia Inquirer All-Southeastern Pennsylvania team.
After redshirting his first year at Notre Dame in 2013, McGlinchey played in all 13 games with one start in 2014. In 2015, he became a starter and started all 13 games at right tackle. Prior to 2016, he moved from right to left tackle. McGlinchey said he would be returning to Notre Dame for his fifth year of eligibility. He was named a team captain, and ended his collegiate career appearing in 51 games with 39 starts.
The San Francisco 49ers selected McGlinchey in the first round (ninth overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft. McGlinchey was the first offensive tackle drafted in 2018 and was the second offensive linemen selected, behind Notre Dame teammate Quenton Nelson (sixth overall). Head coach Kyle Shanahan named him the starting right tackle to begin the regular season, opposite starting left tackle Joe Staley. As a rookie, he started in all 16 games for the 49ers.
McGlinchey’s uncle, John Loughery, played QB at Boston College (1979-82) as did his cousin, Matt Ryan (2004-07). Ryan currently plays for the Atlanta Falcons and earned 2016 NFL MVP honors under current 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, who was Ryan’s offensive coordinator.
In 2019, McGlinchey played in 12 games and helped the 49ers with 13 games. He missed four games during the season due to a knee injury. He helped the 49ers beat the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers to reach Super Bowl LIV. However, the 49ers lost 31-20 to the Kansas City Chiefs.
McGlinchey agreed to a five-year deal worth $87.5 million with $50 million guaranteed, with the Baltimore Ravens on March 13, 2022. McGlinchey joined the Denver Broncos in 2023.
