A native of Miami, Florida, Joyner originally attended Southwest Miami High School, where he played three seasons on the varsity football team at linebacker and defensive back as well as wide receiver and kick returner. In 2009, he was a USA Today High School All-American and national defensive player of the year. He was the number 1 cornerback recruit in his class. He decided to stay in Florida and play at Florida State University.

As a true freshman, Joyner attended Florida State University, where he played in all 14 games. He started at safety his sophomore year which earned him 2nd team all ACC. He started all the games the next two seasons, where he was 1st team all-ACC both seasons.

The Rams selected LaMarcus Joyner in the 2nd round (41st pick) in the 2014 draft. He played 4 seasons with the rams before they placed the franchise tag on him in 2018. After that season, he signed a 4 year deal with the Raiders. After the 2020 season, he was cut by the raiders and the Jets signed him to a 1 year deal.

On March 14, 2019, Joyner signed a four-year, $42 million contract with the Oakland Raiders.

Joyner signed a one-year contract with the New York Jets on March 22, 2021.

On March 15, 2022, Joyner signed a one-year contract extension with the Jets.
