BIOGRAPHY
Casey Jarrett Beathard was born on November 16th, 1993, at Franklin, Tennesse. He is a quarterback in the National Football League.
Bethard comes from a family rich in football tradition. His grandfather, Bobby Beathard, spent 38 years working in the NFL, including 22 seasons as general manager of the Washington Redskins (1978-88) and San Diego Chargers (1989-2000). He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018. His family is equally as passionate about music as they are about sports. His father, Casey, played wide receiver at Elon College before becoming an accomplished country music songwriter who has penned hit songs for artists such as Billy Ray Cyrus and Kenny Chesney. His older brother, Tucker, was a standout baseball player who turned down a scholarship at Middle Tennessee and is now a rising country music singer and songwriter. Beathard’s youngest brother, Clay, also plays quarterback and was named Tennessee’s “Mr. Football” for his division in 2014. Growing up, the Beathard brothers formed a band that performed at local talent shows. C.J. played lead guitar and wrote most of the songs, while Tucker played drums and Clay assisted on guitar.
Beathard became a father in December of 2016, just months before being selected in the 3rd round by San Francisco. A year later, he celebrated his daughter Lyla’s first birthday at the conclusion of his rookie season. Despite the significant achievement of seeing time as a starting QB in his first season, Beathard considers his daughter’s birth one of the greatest and proudest moments of his life. “The love I have experienced for her over this past year is something I never knew was possible,” Beathard said. “I am thankful for all of the joy she brings to my life.”
Beathard played with fellow 49ers 2017 draft choice TE George Kittle at Iowa (2012-16) where he majored in leisure studies (recreation and sport business). During his time at Iowa, Beathard earned the nickname “Sunshine” from Hawkeye fans because his long, flowing hair resembled the character with the same nickname from the football movie “Remember The Titans.” In 2015, he cut off his hair and donated it to Wigs For Kids, a non-profit organization that makes wigs to support for children who have lost their hair due to medical issues at no cost to children or their families.
During his rookie season, Beathard suddenly found himself as the starting quarterback for the 49ers after quarterback Bryan Hoyer went down. During Week 11, Beathard suffered an injury at the end of the 4th quarter and was replaced by recent trade acquisition Jimmy Garoppolo. Although he avoided any serious injury, it was Beathard's final appearance for the 49ers in the 2017 season as Garoppolo was promoted to be the starter, a role he was expected to take on next season. Beathard finished his rookie season completing 123-of-224 passes (54.9%) for 1,430 yards, four touchdowns, and six interceptions. He also rushed for 136 yards and three touchdowns. Members of the 49ers have publicly complimented the attitude and toughness of Beathard during the season.
In 2018, the plan was for Beathard to resume his backup role. However, Garoppolo suffered a season ending injury during Week 3, making Beathard the starter once again. Overall, Beathard finished his second professional season with 1,252 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions while also rushing for 69 yards and a touchdown in just 6 games. Moving into 2019, Beathard is again ready to assume the back up role. However, the 49ers now know they have a proven weapon in the back up position, who is ready to take the field and lead the team at any time.
Beathard signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2023.
