James Michael Scott was born on July 16, 1988, in Chesapeake, Virginia. He is a power forward in the NBA. 

Scott played his high school career at Deep Creek High School and then prepped for a year at Hargrave Military Academy.

After a solid first three years in which he led the Virginia Cavaliers in rebounding as a sophomore and junior, Scott appeared poised for a breakout year in 2010–11. He began the year averaging 15.9 points and 10.2 rebounds in the team's first ten games. But Scott's season ended early as he suffered an ankle injury and underwent season-ending surgery. He was one of the top players in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in 2011–12, averaging 18.0 points and 8.3 rebounds per game, and led the ACC in field goal percentage at .563. He led the Cavaliers to a 22–10 record and their first NCAA tournament berth in five years. Scott finished his Virginia career with 1,538 points and is the third leading rebounder in Cavalier history with 944.

On June 28, 2012, Scott was selected by the Atlanta Hawks with the 43rd overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft. During the 2015-16 season, Scott shot a career-high 40% from 3pt range. From 2017-2019 he had short stints with the Suns, Wizards, and Clippers, before getting traded to the Philadelphia 76ers.  

Scott re-signed with the 76ers for two years on a deal worth $9.8 million.
