Matt James Chapman was born on April 28, 1993, in Victorville, California. He is a third baseman in the MLB.

Matt Chapman attended El Toro High School in Lake Forest, California, and California State University, Fullerton, where he played college baseball for the Cal State Fullerton Titans. He was All-Big West Honorable Mention as a freshman, Second Team as a sophomore and First Team as a junior. He was also a Baseball America and Louisville Slugger Third-Team All-American as a junior. The Oakland Athletics selected Chapman in the first round of the 2014 MLB draft.

In both 2018 and 2019 he won the Platinum Glove Award, Fielding Bible Award, and Gold Glove Award, while also winning the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2018. Additionally, he was an All-Star for the first time in 2019.

In 2021, Matt Chapman was awarded the Gold Glove for his defensive performance.

On March 16, 2022, the Athletics traded Chapman to the Toronto Blue Jays for Gunnar Hoglund, Kevin Smith, Zach Logue, and Kirby Snead. On March 22, 2022, Chapman signed a 2-year, $25 million contract with the Blue Jays, avoiding salary arbitration.

Chapman signed a 3-year deal with the San Francisco Giants just prior to the 2024 season.
