James McCann was born on June 13, 1990, in Santa Barbara, California. He is a catcher in the MLB.

Prior to beginning his professional career, he played college baseball at the University of Arkansas. McCann has also competed for the United States national baseball team. In 2019, as a member of the White Sox, he was named to the MLB All-Star Game.

McCann was born to Jim and Carla McCann on June 13, 1990 in Santa Barbara, California. During Carla's pregnancy, she watched so much of the 1989–90 Los Angeles Lakers that she named her son after James Worthy. As a youth baseball player, he was teammates with future Major League Baseball player and New York Mets teammate Jeff McNeil.

McCann attended Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta, California. Out of high school, the White Sox drafted McCann in the 31st round of the 2008 MLB draft, but he did not sign, opting to attend college at Arkansas.

On December 15, 2020, McCann signed a four-year, $40.6 million contract with the New York Mets. He appeared in 112 games for the Mets during the 2021 season, batting .232 with 10 home runs and 46 RBIs.[citation needed] In May 2022, McCann had surgery to repair a broken hamate bone in his left wrist, missing six weeks, and returned to the injured list in July with a strained oblique muscle. McCann batted .195 in 61 games in the 2022 season.

McCann was acquired along with cash considerations by the Baltimore Orioles on December 21, 2022. On January 13, 2023, minor league outfielder Luis De La Cruz was sent to the Mets to complete the trade.
