BIOGRAPHY
Durham Smythe was born on August 9, 1995, in Havertown, Pennsylvania. He is a tight end in the NFL.
During high school he caught 37 passes for 547 yards and six TDs as senior in 2012 at Belton High School in Belton, Texas Helped Tigers to 6-4 record as senior on a team that averaged 31.6 points per game. He was one of two tight ends on Waco Tribune-Herald Top 50, rated number two on Waco Tribune-Herald list of Central Texas prospects for 2012, a two-time first-team tight end on Texas District 8-5A squad in 2012 and 2011, rated sixth tight end nationally by 247Sports and 15th tight end by Rivals. Rivals rated him 40th among the state of Texas prospects, ranked 188th on 247Sports list of top 247 players, ranked 170th overall and sixth among tight ends on Scout 300 by Scout.com and Texas High School Coaches Association named him to its all-state academic first team for 2012. He caught 22 passes as junior in 2011 for 341 yards and three TDs and also caught three two-point conversion throws, added eight receptions for 120 yards and two TDs as a sophomore in 2010 and played defensive end as a high school freshman before moving to tight end.
Smythe redshirted his freshman year in college, and in the sophomore season, he played in all 13 games and was one of 20 Irish players who made his career debut in the season-opening victory over Rice (Aug. 30). His first career catch was a seven-yard grab at No. 11 Arizona State which was good for a first down.
During junior season, Durham played in three games and started against Texas (Sept. 5), Virginia (Sept. 12) and Ohio State (Jan. 1) and suffered shoulder and knee injuries in the victory at Virginia that resulted in separate surgeries that forced him to miss the final 10 games of the regular season. He returned to the field in the BattleFrog Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State, and registered three catches for 18 yards, including a seven-yard TD grab on a fake field-goal attempt, against the Cavaliers. He made a single reception in each of his three games played.
As a senior, he started all 12 games for the Irish, totaling 112 all-purpose yards during the season, including a season-best 41 against Army (Nov. 12) Recorded nine receptions with two against Army for 41 yards (Nov. 12). He registered four touchdown receptions, including two against Army (Nov. 12), and other touchdown receptions came off a 12-yard pass against Michigan State (Sept. 17) and an eight-yard pass against Navy (Nov. 5).
Smythe was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the fourth round (123rd overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft, using the pick acquired from Cleveland in the Jarvis Landry trade.
In Week 6 of the 2020 season, he scored his first professional touchdown on a four-yard reception against the New York Jets. In the 2020 season, Smythe had 26 receptions for 208 yards and two touchdowns in 15 games and 13 starts.
In the 2021 season, Smythe appeared in all 17 games and started 12. He finished with 34 receptions for 357 yards.
On March 22, 2022, Smythe re-signed with the Dolphins on a two-year contract. In the 2022 season, he appeared in 16 games and started 15. He finished with 15 receptions for 129 yards and one touchdown, which came in Week 12 against Houston.
