Carson Wentz

BIOGRAPHY

Carson Wentz was born on December 30, 1992, in Raleigh, North Carolina. He is a quarterback in the NFL.

In his early years, Wentz attended Century High School where he was a 2010 North Dakota Class 3A Player of the Year. He was an All-conference at quarterback and defensive back and led the team to an 8-3 record, conference title, and state semifinals. He completed 91 of 149 passes for 1,285 yards and 12 TDs, rushed 85 times for 553 yards and 13 TDs, and recorded 61 tackles and two interceptions. 

After he finished high school, Wentz committed to the University of North Dakota State whereas a redshirted freshman in 2012, he played in eight games where he completed 12 of 16 passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns. He completed 8 of 8 passes for 93 yards and one TD against Prairie View A&M on September 22, rushed five times for 22 yards and one TD, and was an MVFC Honor Roll and Commissioner’s Academic Excellence Award. As a sophomore in 2013, he appeared in 11 games as the second-string quarterback, completed 22 of 30 passes for 209 yards and one touchdown, and ran 10 times for 70 yards. He went 10 of 13 passing for 105 yards and a TD against Delaware State and also carried four times for 44 yards against the Hornets. He was an MVFC Honor Roll and Commissioner’s Academic Excellence Award and was NCAA Elite 89 award winner for the highest GPA at the national championship game. As a senior, Wentz started all 16 games at quarterback, set NDSU single-season records for passing attempts, completions, yards, and total offense per game, and completed 228 of 358 passes for 3,111 yards with 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He was also NDSU's second-leading rusher with 138 carries for 642 yards and six TDs while averaging 4.7 yards per carry and his 642 rushing yards were the most by a Bison QB since the veer-option offense of 1996.

In his senior year in 2015, Wentz started the first six games and played in the national championship game. He passed for 1,454 yards and 16 touchdowns in the first six games and was the Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week after leading NDSU on a 10-play, 79-yard game-winning drives in less than two minutes to beat Northern Iowa. Wentz connected with 11 different receivers against UNI going 26 of 40, which were both career highs, for 335 yards, making it the fifth-most passing yards in NDSU single-game history and he set a school record with 143 passing attempts without an interception from the 2014 semifinal game against Sam Houston State to the UNI game. His nine touchdown passes were the best three-game start to a season for a Bison quarterback in school history and he was named to the STATS FCS Offensive Player of the Year watch list and College Football Performance Awards FCS National Performer of the Year watch list. Wentz was also named to the College Sporting News Preseason Fab 50 FCS All-America Team, was an MVFC Honor Roll, Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award, and Presidents Council Academic Award and was an NCAA Elite 90 award winner for the highest GPA at the national championship game. 

After he finished high school, Wentz entered the 2016 NFL Draft where he was the second overall pick by the Philadelphia Eagles. On September 5, Wentz was named the starter for the Eagles 2016 season opener against the Cleveland Browns where he threw for 278 passing yards and 2 touchdowns and was named the Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week for Week 1. He became the first rookie quarterback since 1970 to win his first two games of the season and not throw an interception and in Week 3 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Wentz finished with 301 passing yards and 2 touchdowns and was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week. In his rookie season, Wentz started all 16 games for the Eagles as they finished the season with a 7–9 record and he threw for a league-record 379 completions by a rookie, breaking the record of 354 held by former teammate Sam Bradford. His 379 completions also set a single-season franchise record, breaking the record of 346 also held by Bradford from the previous season and also set a single-season franchise record with 607 pass attempts, the second-highest attempts by a rookie in league history. In the 2017 season, Wentz was the starting quarterback where in the first five games of 2017, he passed for 1,362 yards and 10 touchdowns with three interceptions and NFL insiders and reports ranked Wentz as a possible NFL MVP. Wentz was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week for Week 7 after passing for 268 yards and a career-high-tying four touchdowns against the Washington Redskins in Monday Night Football. Wentz finished the year with 3,296 passing yards, 33 touchdowns, 7 interceptions, a 60.2 completion percentage, and a 101.9 quarterback rating, was selected to his first Pro Bowl on December 19, was ranked third by his fellow players on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2018, which is the highest Top 100 debut ranking in the history of the league, and became a Super Bowl Champion which was the first Super Bowl win in franchise history, after they defeated the New Englan Patriots in Super Bowl LII, led by Nick Foles. Wentz remained as the starting quarterback in the 2018 season and in his 2018 debut, Wentz would finish with 255 yards, one touchdown, and an interception in the Eagles' 20–16 win against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 3. He finished with a 5–6 record and passed for 3,074 yards, 21 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. On April 29, 2019, the Eagles exercised the fifth-year option on Wentz's contract and on June 6, 2019, the Eagles signed Wentz to a four-year contract extension.

Wentz was traded to the Indianapolis Colts on March 17, 2021, in exchange for a 2021 third-round pick and a 2022 conditional second-round pick. He was reunited with former Philadelphia Eagles' coordinator and current Indianapolis Colts' head coach Frank Reich.
