BIOGRAPHY
Avonte Maddox was born on March 31, 1996, in Detroit, Michigan. He is a cornerback in the NFL.
During high school, Maddox was one of the top athletes in the state of Michigan. He played only two years of football at Martin Luther King but was an incredibly versatile performer. He played slot receiver, running back and defensive back and also returned kicks. On offense, Maddox averaged an impressive 27.3 yards per catch as a senior, totaling 35 receptions for 956 yards and 14 touchdowns. He averaged 11.0 yards per rush with 717 yards and four TDs on 65 carries.
During his freshman season in 2014, Maddox made immediate contributions as a true freshman cornerback, playing in all 13 games and starting six contests. He started the final five contests of the season beginning with the Nov. 1 Duke Game. Maddox totaled 32 tackles and three PBUs on the year. During his sophomore season in 2015, Maddox started all 13 games at cornerback. He received Honorable Mention All-ACC recognition from the media after compiling 75 tackles, 12 pass breakups, three interceptions, and a blocked kick. Maddox led Pitt in both INTs and PBUs.
In 2016 during his junior season, Maddox played in 10 games, starting nine at cornerback. He compiled 49 tackles, 8.5 TFLs, 2.5 sacks, three interceptions and eight PBUs on the season. He led Pitt in INTs and PBUs (tied) for the second consecutive year. Maddox finished third in TFLs.
During his senior season in 2017, Maddox started 10 contests at cornerback and was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Defensive Player of the Year.
Maddox was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fourth round in the 2018 NFL Draft. Avonte Maddox signed a 4-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2018.
During the Eagles week 3 game against the Bengals, Maddox suffered an injury which ultimately forced him to miss the next three games before being activated on week 7. On December 18, 2020, Maddox was placed on season-ending injured reserve after an injury sustained during their week 14 game against the Saints. He finished the season with 40 tackles and three pass deflections through 10 games and eight starts.
Starting his last season on his rookie contract in 2021, Maddox began the season by leading the Eagles in tackles (with 9) during their 32-6 win against the Falcons. On October 24 against the Raiders, Maddox recorded his third career interception during the 33-22 loss. On November 20, 2021, Maddox signed a three-year, $22.5 million contract extension with the Eagles. He was placed on the COVID list on January 3, 2022. He was activated one week later on January 10, missing just one game where the Eagles did not play their starters.
Maddox returned as a starter in 2022 as the team's primary nickelback. He was placed on injured reserve on November 14, 2022 with a hamstring injury. He was activated on December 10. Maddox reached Super Bowl LVII where the Eagles lost 38-35 to the Kansas City Chiefs. Maddox recorded seven tackles in the Super Bowl.
