Dwight Powell Children and Family Support Fund
A diagnosis in the family introduces a new range of responsibilities and obligations, such as scheduling and attending medical appointments that might conflict with school and social activities. At UT Southwestern’s Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center, we understand that a cancer diagnosis has a unique impact on each family member, and we are dedicated to helping provide personalized support. The Children and Family Support Fund, made possible by generous support from Dwight Powell of the Dallas Mavericks, provides guidance, education, and resources to help patients and their children cope with cancer.
Powell hosted A Night Of Hope, a fund-raising event where cancer survivors could come and mingle and share their stories. Through an online auction, the event raised over $600,000 for cancer survivors and their families.
To help children and youth in adversity build coping skills and resilience to create positive futures. In 1982, Rainbow Days Founder and CBSG® Program Developer Cathey Brown began Rainbow Days as a result of trying to overcome her own addiction and coming to the realization that there were groups offered for adults with addiction, but nowhere for the children to receive support. From that revelation, Rainbow Days was born.
Vogel Alcove is a non-profit organization on a mission to help young children overcome the lasting and traumatic effects of homelessness. It is our vision that every child in our community has a home, a self-sufficient family and a foundation for success in school and life.
Investigations into cancer, neuroscience, heart disease and stroke, and many other fields keep UT Southwestern at the forefront of medical progress.
